Burkhard Becker, PhD, University of Cologne, Germany
Burkhard Becker is an internationally recognised expert in the molecular biology of green algae. He received his PhD from the University of Cologne in 1991 on the chemical structure of prasinophyte scales. His initial scientific work was on algal cell biology, but more recently he has also studied algal evolution and the molecular ecology of algae. He was one of the first scientists to describe the sister relationship of Zygnematophyceae to land plants (Wodniok et al. 2011). His current research focuses on the cell biology of the contractile vacuole in Chlamydomonas, the adaptation of algae to the terrestrial habitat, and the adaptation of biocrust algae and cyanobacteria to the extreme conditions of polar regions.
